I tried dragging and dropping books for the Kindle from Project gutenberg into the documents folder but they're not showing up in the kindle's collection.

Added (1). The files are indeed.mobi

What format were the books in?

Kindle Paperwhite only recognizes the Kindle format (AZW) and.MOBI formats.

I've downloaded books in MOBI format and put them on my Kindle in the documents folder and it worked just fine.

I'd have assumed they went in the documents folder, too. Try using Calibre - it supports the Paperwhite and it's free.

Just transfer them via USB from the computer and it should work. There's some detailed steps here, and see how to have the books show up:

Yes, the books get to be in recognized format, for reading on the Kindle.

Hope that helps.

If anyone still has a problem finding your book. Make sure you have all items checked oh your Kindle. For some reason the MOBi file book I downloaded from Guttenberg doesn't show up as a book on the paperwhite.
