Can you turn off the back light on a Kindle Paperwhite?
I was going to get my Mum the Kindle Touch for Christmas but this has been replaced by the Paperwhite, so I might as well buy the newest one, but can you turn the back light off on it, or is that not an option?
Also if having no actual button annoying on the Paperwhite
You cannot turn the backlight off on the Paperwhite, however, it does not impact the battery much at all, and when it is turned all the way down you can't even tell it is on.
I'm not sure what you mean by no actual button, it has a power button on the bottom. If you are referring to the page turning buttons, that's really up to personal preference. I've had the Paperwhite for a while and have had no issues with the touchscreen page turning.
If you are looking to get it by Christmas, I would suggest going to a retail store like Best Buy, as there is a minimum 6 week waiting period to get one from Amazon.
Yes, you can turn it off. I was fooling with one in the office supply store the other day and you can adjust the settings to turn it all the way off, and then there are 10 brightness levels of having it on.
Of course you can.
No, the light on the Kindle Paperwhite cannot be completely turned off. See the section "Adjusting the Screen Light" on the official help page here for details:
However, when you set the light to the lowest setting, it's very dim and it's nearly off. Many users are just unaware of the light when it's set to lowest.
There's a good review here, from a user who has both the Kindle Touch and the Kindle Paperwhite. It'd help your decision:
You can still get the Kindle Paperwhite before Christmas if you get it early. Amazon is stocking it up quite quickly and it now shows it's in stock on the sales page.
Hope that helps.
