It probably needs a new battery. You can get them on amazon or other stores online, just get a battery kit because it will be easy for you to change it.
If you had to jiggle the charger, it is probably either the charger cord/head, or the hole on the actual kindle where the charger plugs in. Try someone else's charger, a friend's or a family member's. If it charges, you'll need to buy a new charger. If it works on theirs but not yours, it's the charger hole. (Sorry, don't know the actual term… )
Bring it to an electronics store, preferably where you bought it from. If you still have warranty and a receipt, they'll probably exchange it.
Hope all goes well.
With the additional details, Isaac is probably right. Your battery could either faulty or fully charged, and I'm guessing it's not the latter.
Try to reboot your Kindle Fire, most probably this'll solve the problem. There's a good discussion here talking about how to reboot the device, and suggestions to related problems including charging, battery, power on, frozen screen, etc.:
If problem persists after trying those suggestions, you get to find Amazon for help.
