Has stopped over a day now on the shutdown page. I tried charging and then letting run down also.
Doesn't respond to tap on page that says shutdown now. It is it is 5 months old.

Hold power button for 20 seconds strait, that should work and not delette your stuff. If you can't find anything else connect to computer backup your stuff and do a reset and reset it completely, but you will lose your stuff.

Like most tech hardware, the Kindle Fire may lock up and freeze from time to time. If tapping on the screen or using the Power button normally doesn't work, you should be able to press and hold the Power button on the bottom of the device for about 20 seconds. In some situations, it may take a bit longer.

There're actually quite a lot of people having such kind of problem on their Kindle Fires. There's a good discussion here, put up by an experienced user, on handling frozen and charging issues on the Kindle Fire. See if the suggestions help:

Hope that helps.

Try holding the power button down until it actually shuts itself off. This may take up to 20 seconds.

Then when you restart, it will reboot and function normally… Hopefully.
