Do you have to be near a WiFi hotspot or does it act as its own wifi hotspot like some droid phones?

Built in, you need wifi availability. No built in hotspot. I have one.

It has Wi-Fi capability. However you would need to be a location that offers Wi-Fi internet such as Starbucks, restaurants, McDonalds, or through your home network in order to get internet access.

If you not near a Wi-Fi area then you won't have any internet access for your Kindle Fire.

You do need to be near Wi-Fi to access the Internet.

When I'm on the road I use my Android phone as a hotspot to give my Kindle Fire Internet access.

This is easy to do, especially if you have a ROOTED Android phone.
