I'd like to find a low cost hdmi monitor which can be used with a raspberry Pi computer which has hdmi output. I know the Kindle Fire can put out an hdmi signal… Can it also take one in and display it on its screene?

HDMI out will not take anything in.

Have some idea here the "Fire" will work also.
"Computers that one is a mix between the two super-cheap computers. On the one hand, they use E Ink dislplay found on the Kindle Fire. On the other hand, they use the Raspberry Pi computer with an ARM Cortex-A8 700 MHz.
The first step to combine these two devices is to jailbreak or rooting on Kindle Fire. Then you can install the terminator emolator and remotely login to the Raspberry Pi. Then, you just add an external keyboard or other keyboard types." http://worldtechnologycenter.blogspot.com/2012/09/kindleberry-pi-computer-with.html#.UHWrva7ecwI

No way… You should instead try getting an HDMI monitor!
