Can i read books on the ipod touch gen 4 or 5 like a kindle? I know you can read newsstand but can you read/purchase a book to read on it?

Yes, you can. There's a free app by Apple called iBooks where you can specifically read books, pdfs, ebooks, etc.

Sure you can. Just get the Kindle reading app on your iPod Touch and you can read on the iPod.

However, the 3.5" to 4" screen size of iPod won't be good for reading. The Kindle Fire has 7" screen, which is very close to the size of actual paperback books. The bigger screen is better for movies, web surfing, games, magazines, etc. The speaker on the Kindle Fire HD is better as well, it's dolby audio speaker and it has the best speaker among all tablets in the market. The iPod Touch, on the other hand, is more portable because it's smaller. If you don't care on features other than music, then iPod Touch can be fine too.
